The YMCA of Newark and Vicinity is looking for a Full Time Program Director responsible for the development, administration and management of all programs, staff, and financials of the Emergency Resident Program (ERP). This program is geared towards aiding the individuals and families residing at the YMCA in all matters related to their social functions that may adversely affect their lives. The Program Director is expected to ensure high standards of program quality. Programs shall be conducted in a manner consistent with established policies and procedures to enable the Association to achieve its defined goals and objectives. The YMCA’s recruitment process includes comprehensive background screening including pre-employment drug test and criminal background check and upon hire, a wide range of training. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that the YMCA meets the goals of being a mission driven, values-based, community-oriented organization.

SUMMARY OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for recruiting and selection process, training, scheduling, payroll processing, providing leadership and supervision, performance management as relates to evaluation, coaching & counseling, and corrective action, and separation ERP program staff within the established personnel procedures of the Association.
  • Evaluate the needs for social services and make necessary referrals to the appropriate social service agencies.
  • Ensure that the referrals from the City of Newark ESG program are coming in and reimbursements are received through the allocated funds for shelter nights.
  • Counsel clients pertaining to various aspects of the public assistance and related programs available.
  • Address inquiries from DFAB regarding residents’ issues and concerns.
  • Assist Supportive Service Specialists in resolving their assigned clients difficult and complex social issues.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Supportive Services Specialists as well as Counselors to provide appropriate counseling to the clients who lack sufficient capacities in planning and managing their life affairs.
  • Provide guidance to the counselors in the areas of counseling skills, communication, sensitivity and concerns of shelter residents.
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff members in planning and providing services to clients.
  • Maintain a liaison with community and civic organizations and social agencies.
  • Ensure that individual counseling sessions as well as group counseling are provided on a weekly basis to the emergency housing clients.
  • Prepare reports in the form of case entries and prepare social case histories.
  • Maintain records and files according to the internal as well as mandated requirements.
  • Provide Senior Director of Housing with Monthly Statistical Reports.
  • Ensure all files and records are prepared and maintained on a regular basis to ensure preparedness for all inspections.
  • Prepare Monthly Schedules of ERP Counselors shift coverage.
  • Solicits coverage when staff is absent due to callouts or time off taken including PTO, Vacation, or any other type of leave.
  • Assure compliance with state and local regulations. Ensure that program standards are met, and safety procedures are followed; all accidents and incidents are reported involving self, residents, guests and other employees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in social services field from an accredited college or university with a minimum Five (5) years of experience working in a social service agency.
  • knowledge of principles and practices of social work, social and economic issues, and state and local resource agencies.
  • Minimum Three years of experience in staff management.
  • Strong human relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution skills and abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft (Word, Excel, Power-point), data entry, utilizing emails and internet.
  • Excellent time management skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Must have strong attention to details.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and to define and solve problems.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects independently.
  • Ability to demonstrate passion, enthusiasm and support for the mission and values of the YMCA.
  • Ability to create a culture of serving the population and staff within the Housing & Social Responsibility department.
  • Ability to work closely with other employees and team members to ensure a positive and constructive environment within the program or department and throughout the agency.
  • Flexibility in work schedule when needed, may require evening and weekend work.
  • Must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Certification in first aid and CPR is desired.
  • Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
