Feeding Pennsylvania (FPA) is the statewide association of nine Feeding America affiliated food banks. The mission of FPA is to promote and aid member food banks in securing food and other resources to reduce hunger and food insecurity across the state and to provide a shared voice on the issues of hunger and food access within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Member food banks span across all 67 counties and serve nearly 2 million people annually by distributing more than 164 million pounds of food throughout Pennsylvania to more than 2,700 agencies and feeding programs. The organization’s estimated operating budget for this fiscal year is $42M. This figure includes the operation of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Produce Cooperative (MARC), which is a program located at the Port of Philadelphia as a cooperative that food banks in the Mid-Atlantic region can join to receive fresh produce.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Feeding Pennsylvania staff, programs, policies, and execution of its mission. Areas of responsibility include strategic and operational planning, financial management, corporate relations, community relations, board relations, fund development, and staff development. The FPA Board of Directors is looking for a strategic CEO who possesses strong leadership skills, an ability to cultivate strong relationships, and advocacy experience.
- Design, implement, and review FPA programs, policies and systems to best achieve the goals established by the FPA Board.
- Assure compliance with grant terms, conditions and reporting.
- Recommend and oversee implementation of strategic and operating plans.
Government and Community Relations
- Experience working with government agencies and managing government contracts.
- As chief spokesperson for FPA, serve as the network’s point person for the media, key stakeholders, state and federal legislators, and state and federal agencies.
- Work collaboratively with Feeding America on public policy and advocacy for the good of FPA’s membership and the greater charitable food network.
- Collaborate with member food banks in building regional and statewide programs with corporations providing food, funds, transportation and distribution services, and cause-related marketing initiatives.
- Work closely with FPA’s contracted lobbying firms to advance state and federal legislation that supports the organization’s mission.
- Assume responsibilities for financial performance, measurement, and compliance.
- Direct the budgetary process and assure adequate risk management strategies and financial reporting relationships are in place.
- Personally review all financial statements and keep the FPA Board advised of financial performance, challenges and opportunities.
- Promote a strong, effective and collegial relationship with all members of the FPA Board of Directors.
- Meet regularly with the Chair of the Board and executive committee, advising regarding operations, finances and government relations.
- Focus on building initiatives to strengthen performance of all network members while developing solutions to organizational challenges.
- Take initiative to expand the skills, knowledge and diversity of FPA staff.
- Make certain that expectations for position responsibilities are clear and performance is regularly assessed.
- Oversee the Director of MARC, ensuring the effectiveness of the program’s operations.
Professional Qualifications and Personal Attributes
The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of management experience, preferably in a nonprofit, human services, or government services role. This person must possess a high degree of energy, integrity, and creativity. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in managing staff and volunteers, will be comfortable working with the recipients of Food Bank programs, and will be capable of communicating with a wide range of audiences. Specifically, the ideal candidate will possess the following attributes, skills, and experience.
Outstanding interpersonal, leadership and communication abilities
- Demonstrate self-confidence, authority and enthusiasm.
- Possess superior written and communication skills that are effective with a wide range of audiences.
- Demonstrate a clear commitment to the FPA mission and its success.
- Experience motivating and organizing people and projects with limited resources.
Relevant experience managing an organization
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and an outstanding ability to lead and manage a team of professionals from different cultures, mindsets and areas of expertise.
- Display strong organizational skills and an orientation to detail.
- Ability to manage/resolve conflicts (arising in different dimensions).
- Experience working with a Board of Directors.
Financial Management and Revenue Generation Skills
- Ability to develop, review and implement budgets and cost control policies.
- Experience securing and implementing government grants and contracts.
Education, Experience, and Training
- Undergraduate degree required.
- Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in a nonprofit organization or similar institution.
- Government relations experience preferred.
- Solid understanding of food and hunger public policy with experience working on federal and state grant programs preferred.
