The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is seeking a collaborative, energetic and experienced advocacy professional to develop and steward grassroots advocate outreach and communications. Primary duties of the Director of Grassroots Advocacy for the Government Affairs and Advocacy department of the ADA will include the development and stewardship of existing and new diabetes advocates.

This individual will identify new opportunities to grow engagement to increase advocate participation. The successful candidate will have a strong background in relationship management with the ability to develop high level communications and supporting materials.

Through effective leadership, creativity and strong communication and project management, this individual will manage and steward the advocacy alert process and advocate messaging communications to help drive increased engagement and connection to our mission goals. This individual works with the Federal and State teams to complement lobbying activity by mobilizing the diabetes advocate nationwide network of grassroots and grasstops advocates to facilitate and leverage their relationships with elected officials.

The ideal candidate must have exceptional organizational, project management, written, and verbal communication skills. The candidate must have the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and achieve results in a team environment. Furthermore, the ability to manage projects to successful completion is mandatory.

This position will be a remote worker.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide strategic thinking creating and executing grassroots advocacy communications
  • Creating and disseminating advocacy action alerts, developing meaningful connections with advocates
  • The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of the federal legislative process and experience in grassroots recruitment, training, and mobilization.
  • Producing materials to support our federal and state legislative priorities that contribute to the overall goal of political involvement and awareness of our advocacy efforts
  • Oversee stewardship activities with diabetes advocates; ensure a high-touch response
  • Facilitate and coordinate Congressional Meetings with advocates in support of priorities
  • Deliver high quality customer service to all constituents
  • Ensure compliance with ADA policies, including risk management and financial controls
  • Demonstrate integrity, collaboration, a growth/innovative mindset, and strong stewardship skills
  • Other duties as assigned
 


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Knowledge of survey creation and data management tools
  • Knowledge of grassroots advocacy tools
  • Established success in advocacy communications, non-profit and/or political science or project management experience preferred
  • Knowledge of grassroots advocacy; diabetes knowledge preferred
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial drive
  • Outcome driven with ability to respond to changing circumstances and priorities
  • Excellent relationship building and customer service skills
  • Excellent and transparent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Team Player and effective collaborator, creative, positive, and energetic thinker
  • Proficient in computer-based information systems (Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends
  • Ability to travel

Compensation Range: $75K- $90K DOE
